Things to do when staying at Claremont House

There are is adventure and activities galore on the doorstep of Claremont House from walking and cycling to rock climbing (indoor and outdoor). Historic houses and gardens, an award winning cinema and of course Lake Windermere for cruises and with Ambleside's location of being the heart of the Lake District, you'll not far from any of the stunning lakes and villages in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here is just a few things you can enjoy.

Walking in the Lake District

The most popular reason thousands of visitors choose Ambleside for their holiday or weekend break, to walk the magnificent Lake District fells. On our doorstep, Loughrigg, Wansfell and Farfield but just a short drive to Langdale, Coniston, Grasmere or Keswick. Lower level walks are in abundance too down to Lake Windermere or perhaps up to Rydal Water. or the beautiful Tarn Hows near Coniston Whatever type of walking adventure you love, Ambleside has it all.

Cycling

Cycling is another very popular reason for guests staying with us here at Claremont House. New cycle routes have been installed like the one through to the Langdale Valley with many parts off road through to us being a base for taking on some of the steepest roads in Britian such as Red Bank, Hardknott and Wrynose. We're also a great base for some of the big cycle sportives such as the Fred Whitton and Lakeland Loop and the Tour of Britian regularly passes by our front door!

Wray Castle National Trust

National Trust Properties

Whether you are into poetry, on a family holiday or are Beatrix Potter fans, the National Trust owned and run properties in and around Ambleside are all a delight. Wray Castle is ideal for families and has the stunning Claife Heights viewing station for views right across Lake Windermere. Hill Top, the once home of Beatrix Potter is another great day out. A short drive up to Grasmere and it's all about Wordsworth with his formarer home Allan Bank.

Cinemas and Theatres

We are lucky to have award winning cinemas and theatres in Ambleside and Windermere. Iddeal at any time of the year but especially good if the Lake District weather takes hold and during a winter break! Zeffirelli’s Cinema and Art Centre is just 200 yards from us screening all the latest and art house films as well as live music. The Old Laundry Theatre in nearby Bowness attracts top class performances including music and comedy so too The Theatre by The Lake in Keswick.

Lake Cruises

A lovely little stroll takes you down to Waterhead where there is a Windermere Lake Cruises pier. From there take one of the frries up to Bowness or do the full length of Lake Windermere up to Lakeside. At Waterhead motor and rowing boats can be hired too. Nearby Coniston is another great place for on the water activities with the Coniston Launch but also plenty of boat hire and watersports to enjoy.
